| This course analyzes the nature of conflict in the Balkans in light of the region's tumultuous history. The complications that arise in teaching and learning about history are analyzed given the relations among diverse ethnic groups there. Several case studies are discussed to evaluate specific initiatives in conflict prevention (Macedonia/UNPREDEP), negotiation (Kosovo/Rambouillet) and mediation (Bosnia/Vance Owen Peace Plan & Dayton). Lessons for the present and future are drawn from these case assessments, particularly given on-going turmoil in this region and other areas like Afghanistan and Iraq. | |||||
